A new study by Maarit Jaakkola and Jenny Wiik provides the first comprehensive overview of how Nordic journalism educators are approaching the matter, and how prepared they feel to teach AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"researcher-block\">\n\t\n\t<a href=\"\/researchers\/malgorzata-anna-pacholczyk\" class=\"researcher-block__researcher\">\n\t\t<div class=\"researcher\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"researcher__image\" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/api.nordmedianetwork.org\/storage\/images\/researchers\/malgorzata-anna-pacholczyk.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"researcher__meta\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"researcher__name\">\n\t\t\t\t\tMalgorzata Anna Pacholczyk\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n                <div class=\"researcher__title\">\n                    \n                    Managing Editor &#8211;                     University of Bergen, Norway &#8211; Department of Information Science and Media Studies                <\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jaakkola&rsquo;s &amp; Wiik&rsquo;s article,\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0No-panic Pragmatism: Nordic Journalism Educators\u2019 Preparedness to Teach Artificial Intelligence (AI) in 2024\u00a0\u00bb, published in\u00a0<em>Journalistica<\/em>, draws on a survey of 118 educators across Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results indicate that in 2024, over half of the respondents had already incorporated AI into their teaching, either by using tools such as ChatGPT or by addressing issues like plagiarism and ethics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI was most often linked to journalism ethics, fact-checking, and information validation. Practical applications, including subtitling and data visualisation, were also noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Educators voiced both concern and optimism about artificial intelligence, with feelings of being \u00ab\u00a0troubled\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a0inspired\u00a0\u00bb receiving the highest ratings. While many saw AI as inevitable, they emphasised that \u201cthe journalistic core values and understandings of the world need to remain the same\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A respondent captured the prevailing \u201cno-panic\u201d attitude, noting:&nbsp;\u201cJust as social media became an integral part of journalism, AI will similarly be integrated in the coming years. So, there\u2019s no need to panic&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;we just need to incorporate AI into the workflow\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Institutional support was uneven. Most Nordic universities had guidelines for academic use of AI, but fewer addressed its role in practical journalism courses.
