By&nbsp;<g class=\"gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"6\" data-gr-id=\"6\">organising<\/g> on Twitter, ordinary people helped to increase the safety of the public and reduce the spread of&nbsp;<g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">rumours<\/g>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April 2017, a truck drove at full speed through Drottninggatan in central Stockholm, killing five and injuring at least 15 people. The terrorist attack shook Sweden, and on Twitter tens of thousands of people opened up their homes to those in need of protection using the hashtag #openstockholm.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a new study published in the scientific journal&nbsp;<em>Nordicom Review<\/em>, Minttu Tikka, a <g class=\"gr_ gr_3 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"3\" data-gr-id=\"3\">researcher<\/g> at the University of Helsinki, examines the role of ordinary people in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-ab8bc585-6426-4761-aff1-5a73b25d305c\">Helped to increase security<\/h2><style>#block-ab8bc585-6426-4761-aff1-5a73b25d305c h2, #block-ab8bc585-6426-4761-aff1-5a73b25d305c h3, #block-ab8bc585-6426-4761-aff1-5a73b25d305c h4, #block-ab8bc585-6426-4761-aff1-5a73b25d305c h5 , #block-ab8bc585-6426-4761-aff1-5a73b25d305c { color: #000; }<\/style>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study shows that the communicative role that ordinary people have in crises and disasters has changed following the development of new digital technology. Instead of just witnessing events, citizens can now actively participate in crisis work by, for example,&nbsp;organising<g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace replaceWithoutSep gr-progress\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\"> <\/g>themselves on platforms like Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 The response of ordinary people following the terrorist attack on Drottninggatan illustrates the active role of citizens in crisis situations. By opening up their homes on Twitter they helped to increase the safety of the public, and ultimately to increase the resilience of the society as a whole, Minttu Tikka says<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-0d9ca508-d031-4c48-aac6-c58ec56fc90b\">Rationality as an overarching theme<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study, which is based on a content analysis of the Twitter flow around the hashtag #openstockholm, also shows that the majority of tweets (71 percent) that were published focused on rational aspects of the event: they offered help or shared instructions and other important information with the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; It seems that people&#8217;s immediate response to a crisis is to strive to&nbsp;<g class=\"gr_ gr_11 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"11\" data-gr-id=\"11\">rationalise<\/g> the event, rather than, for example, expressing emotions.
