Associate Professor of Film and Media in Education

About the position

The Department of Teacher Education is announcing a permanent full-time position as Associate Professor of Film and Media in Education.

The position is based in the Section for Arts, Physical Education and Sports. The Section is responsible for teaching modules as part of the 5-year integrated programme for a Master’s in Primary and Secondary Education. Three different programmes are offered: Primary Education: Grades 1-7, Secondary Education: Grades 5-10, and Secondary Education: Grades 8-13. The Department of Teacher Education also offers a post-graduate certificate of education, a 2-year programme offering a Master’s in Arts Education, in-service courses and PhD courses. The Section for Arts, Physical Education and Sports is responsible for teaching modules on all these study programs.

You will report to The Head of Section for Arts, Physical Education and Sports.

Duties of the position

  • Arts-based, practice-led and theoretical teaching and supervision within different study programmes, especially connected to teaching in film and media, artistic practices, and cross-curricular collaborative teaching practices with aesthetic approaches to learning.
  • Assist in further developing the subject area and teaching programmes, including continuing education and in-service courses
  • Supervise Master’s students, doctoral candidates and research fellows, as well as supervising students during their practicums
  • Research within your professional field and contribute to relevant research groups
  • Initiate new research projects and contribute to applications for funding
  • Develop and build research networks
  • Develop and strengthen film and media as a subject and approach in school, kulturskole, other formal and informal learning contexts where film and media is used, and teacher education
  • Work on administrative tasks
  • Administrate the courses and subject area with other academic staff

Required selection criteria

The Associate Professor of Film and Media in Education position requires that one meets the criteria as listed in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4. 

  • A PhD (or competence at a corresponding level documented by academic work of the same scope and quality) in film and media or a similar subject area.
  • Applicants who can document that they are in the final stages of their PhD or similar will be evaluated for the position.
  • Practical teaching experience in film and media or another close subject area in school, kulturskole or other formal or informal learning context.
  • Teaching experience from teacher education or other relevant foreign institutions of education.
  • Excellent oral and written presentation skills.

You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Preferred selection criteria

  • Research relevant to schools and/or teacher education will be emphasized in the assessment. A mix of arts-based, practice-led and theory-driven research will be emphasized in the assessment.
  • Applicants with documented ability to publish in international academic journals within their subject area will be prioritized. Research from the past five years excluding any statutory leave of absence will be given particular weight.
  • The ability to initiate and lead research and development will be emphasized.
  • Qualifications in varied research methods will be emphasized, in particular qualifications in performative and arts-based research is desired. We are preferably looking for a candidate with a strong artistic practice in film.
  • Pedagogical skills and qualifications will be emphasized. Assessment will be based on documented teaching material, the form and quality of the published work, teaching experience, supervision of Master’s and doctoral students, and other pedagogical experience.
  • Practical pedagogical education or equivalent is desired.
  • Teaching experience in the Norwegian school system is desired.
  • Experience demonstrating high digital competence in an educational context is desired.

Salary and conditions

As Associate Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 600,000 to NOK 705,000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position requires that you are present and accessible to the university on a daily basis.

  • A description of the academic and artistic (including documented arts educational) works that you regard as most relevant, and that you want given particular attention in your assessment
  • Name and contact information of three references, including one in a leadership position to you
  • Details of any research projects you have managed with details regarding funding, duration, and associated publications
  • A research plan
  • Details of teaching qualifications based on “Documentation of applicant’s teaching qualifications in connection with appointment to an academic position at NTNU”

Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.

In the assessment of the best-qualified applicant, we will emphasize education, experience and personal suitability as well as your motivation for the position. You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Masters and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.

We also consider experience from research management and participation in research projects. We place great emphasis on your scientific work from the last five years.
