Job description
A Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) in Rhetoric and Communication is available at the Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies, University of Oslo.
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the department’s research on Rhetoric and Linguistic Communication (RETKOM). Several approaches to language and communication are represented within RETKOM, most centrally rhetorics, conversation analysis and interactional linguistics, literacy, textual studies, and studies in non-fiction (sakprosaforskning). Proposals on the following research topics are particularly welcome:
- 1) Conversation analysis and/or interactional linguistics. The department has an established research group on conversation analysis and interactional linguistics that co-operates with the other Norwegian universities as well as internationally. The research in CA/IL has broad focus, varying from informal everyday interaction to multilingual interaction, and to various institutional situations.
- 2) Modern rhetoric. The department has a growing research environment for empirically oriented research on rhetoric. The research is especially centered on public discourse, the way this discouse takes place in numerous arenas and its ways of expression, and on rhetoric in school.
- 3) Literacy and writing culture. The department has ongoing research within literacy and writing culture that focus on both historical and contemporary material. The research field spans from reading and writing competences in school (both with and without Norwegian as a second language perspectives) to runic inscriptions.
The proposal can focus on one of these topics, or it can seek to combine them. The project should be of relevance to Nordic languages, culture, and society.
The person appointed will be affiliated with the Faculty’s organized research training. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD. The appointment is for a duration of 3 years. All PhD Candidates who submit their doctoral dissertation for assessment with a written recommendation from their supervisor within 3 years or 3 ½ years after the start of their PhD position, will be offered, respectively, a 12 or 6 month Completion Grant.Foto: Colourbox
Qualification requirements
- A Master’s degree or equivalent in rhetoric, linguistics, philology, discourse- and communication studies or another relevant field. The Master’s degree must have been obtained and the final evaluation must be available by the application deadline.
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English, see Language requirements and in a Scandinavian language.
- Personal suitability and motivation for the position.
To be eligible for admission to the doctoral programmes at the University of Oslo, applicants must, as a minimum, have completed a five-year graduation course (Master’s degree or equivalent), including a Master’s thesis of at least 30 ECTS. In special cases, the Faculty may grant admission on the basis of a one-year Master course following an assessment of the study programme’s scope and quality.
In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on:
- The project’s scientific merit, research-related relevance and innovation
- The applicant’s estimated academic and personal ability to complete the project within the time frame
- The applicant’s ability to complete research training
- Good collaboration skills and an ability to join interdisciplinary academic communities
Applicants who have recently graduated with excellent results may be given preference.
