The University of Akureyri is advertising a vacancy for 100% position of an assistant professor in media studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The main responsibilities are teaching at bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. level and research within the field of social sciences. The immediate supervisor is the Head of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The job location is in Akureyri, Iceland.
The term of appointment is five years with a starting date of August 1, 2021. After the term of appointment, the candidate can request a permanent position in accordance with Regulations 258/2016 on the Work of Evaluation Committee and Hiring of Faculty at the University of Akureyri. Should the successful candidate be considered qualified as associate professor or full professor by the Evaluation Committee, a promotion can be considered at the time of appointment.
The Faculty of Social Sciences and the media studies program
The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Akureyri offers bachelor programs in general social sciences, media studies, modern studies and policing, a research-based master’s program in social sciences, a master’s program in media and communication (in collaboration with the University of Iceland) and a Ph.D. program in sociology. The overall number of students at the Faculty is around 500 and it employs 16 teachers in 15 positions.
The BA program in media studies is built on an interdisciplinary foundation of social sciences and humanities, interweaved with courses that give students insight into the practicalities of work in media. The program thus aims to give students a board introduction to theories and practices in journalism as well as a solid foundation in theories of media en communications.
