Climate journalism is developing fast, both as practice and as a research field, and can be explored in many ways. To illustrate the scope of possible research problematics we have listed a series of possible, timely questions below. This list is by no means exhaustive.
A project description for this position will ideally draw on a combination of theories and knowledge of climate change, the environment and nature on the one hand, and theories and knowledge of journalism, media and communication on the other.
In our evaluation of project descriptions, we will emphasize research design, feasibility, scientific quality and originality.
We will prioritize applications that strengthens our understandings of how journalism contributes (or do not contribute) to societal engagement with climate change, or engagement with climate change in certain parts of society. As an example, this implies that we will prioritize applications focusing on media where climate journalism is a priority over applications that explore media or journalism where climate change is not prioritized at all.
The PhD project may adress, but is not limited to, the following themes:
- what kind of climate journalism engages who, and in what ways?
- how does climate journalism address innovations and improvements in narratives, visuals or graphics?
- what sort of ideals or roles are expressed within climate journalism?
- what kind of climate communication strategies can be identified within journalism?
- what are the journalistic perceptions of (climate) crisis? How does this relate to other crisis, like the crisis of nature or economic crisis?
- how can climate journalism create hope while remaining truthful?
- how can we understand the effect of climate journalism in society and within different media publics?
- how can research of climate journalism help the development of climate journalism in practice?
