About the division
Media and communication, as both technologies and practices, play a powerful role in the contemporary processes of globalization. The Media, Globalization and Social Change Division explore how media and communication generate, or not, changes in the surrounding social contexts. The Division is particularly interested in contributions that investigate various ‘global’ phenomena – for example, migration, racism, development, democratic decline, nationalism, and gender (in)equality – from a national, international, transnational or global perspective. Chiming with the general conference theme – Crisis and Resilience: Nordic Media Research on the Frontline – we also invite submissions that explicitly approach the COVID-19 pandemic as a global development and seek to problematize the nation-based responses to it. We encourage both empirical and theoretical contributions that critically discuss the various themes of this division. We also welcome contributions that use media and communication theories in non-media centric studies and those that transcend disciplinary boundaries in studying media and communications. We accept micro and macro studies, single-country studies and cross-cultural comparisons.
