Division 10: Television and Film Studies

About the division

The division of television and film studies explores a wide range of current and historical aspects of television and film as cultural and economic institutions, as narrative and aesthetic forms, and as commodities and lived experience in the creative media industries.

Recently, major technological transformations have challenged traditional broadcast television and film circulation, leading to new models of production, funding, distribution and consumption. New genres and formats have emerged within the world of fiction as well as in factual genres. Web TV and online streaming services have become still more influential. New ways of watching television and film have emerged as audiences are binge-watching, using second screens and engaging with content through social media platforms. There are new sources of financing and new ways of thinking about, for example, public service broadcasting and film funding in a global media landscape. However, while much is new in these digital times of cross-media content and convergence, many developments build on established modes of production and traditional understandings of genres, texts and audiences.

The television and film studies division encourages research into these interplays of change and continuity from a wide variety of analytical and theoretical perspectives and to facilitate collaborations between Nordic researchers from different disciplines with a shared interest in the complex topic of how to understand and study television and film both now and back in history.

This division accepts full papers, long abstracts, panel presentations and workshops. Discussants will be appointed to papers and long abstracts. Still, the division also assumes that all participants will read each other’s papers in order for the discussion to be more informed.
