Dr Deepika Kashyap, Ph.D.

Dr Deepika Kashyap is a new media researcher whose work examines the intersections of artificial intelligence, digital media, folklore, and indigenous knowledge systems. She is an Affiliated Researcher at the Centre for Folk Culture Studies, University of Hyderabad, and formerly served as Assistant Professor of Visual Communication at SRM Institute of Science and Technology and as Assistant Professor and Course Coordinator in Digital Media at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC). She developed the concept of algorithmic folklore to examine how AI and digital platforms shape the visibility and governance of indigenous narratives.
She earned her PhD from the University of Hyderabad (2024), where her thesis was nominated for the UGC PhD Excellence Citation Award (2025). She was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Tartu, Estonia (2019–2020), and has presented her work at leading universities across Europe, Asia, and the United States.
She is keen to build collaborative research networks across the Nordic region, Asia, and Australia on AI, digital humanities, indigenous knowledge, and culturally inclusive digital futures. Her research advances the concept of algorithmic folklore, exploring how AI systems and platform infrastructures shape the circulation, visibility, and governance of indigenous narratives.
