Janne Matikainen (D.Soc.Sc.) is a university lecturer in the Media and Communication Studies at the University of Helsinki, Finland. He has a doctorate in social psychology. Earlier, he has been working as a researcher and a part-time professor in communication and media studies. He has appointed as an adjunct professor in the University of Helsinki and University of Tampere, Finland. He is concentrated on the social aspects of the internet and his research focuses on interaction in online communication and communities, online participation and content-generation motives in social media. Secondly, his expertise is concentrated on the media audiences, media generations, trust and the relationship between traditional and social media. Methodologically he has been wide-ranging, using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Matikainen has published several academic textbooks in Finnish about online communication, new media and research methods. He has published articles in international textbooks and in such journals as Media & Communication, Mobile Media & Communication, Participations: Journal of Audience & Reception Studies.
