I am a communication researcher specialized on photojournalism and visual cultural research. I have a background as a newspaper journalist.
My research projects have focused on work practices of photojournalism professionals. Currently, I work as a postdoctoral researcher at Tampere University, where I earned my PhD in 2016. In my current project, I study visual storytelling strategies of Finnish news media on Instagram. My earlier projects have dealt with international picture agency professionals and photography professionals working for humanitarian NGOs, digital photo editing practices and online news videos. My research interests are intertwined with the questions of the evidential power of photographs, professional ethics, rituals of news work, and professional vision.
During 2019-2021, I was the editor-in-chief of the Finnish scientific journal Media & viestintä [Media & communication] together with my colleagues Laura Ahva and Anneli Lehtisalo. I am also part of a Finnish network for visual cultural studies, Visual Studies Lab, founded at the Tampere University.
