Kari Suomalainen is a Doctoral Student in Communication Sciences at LUT University in Lappeenranta, Finland, working in the Disinformation, Propaganda & Soft Power Research Lab.

Kari's research interests include fact-checking, news, disinformation and propaganda. His dissertation is focused on fact-checking as a method for counteracting disinformation, cultivating trust for news organisations and fostering a healthier media environment. His current work explores themes such as the epistemology of fact-checking, the legitimacy of news organisations, and the detection, analysis and theoretical understanding of propaganda.

Kari holds a master's degree in sociology and is passionate about understanding the societal impacts of phenomena related social media, mass media and AI, such as the increased dissemination of disinformation. He is a member of the board of the Finnish Association for Communication Studies Mevi Ry.
