Taichi Niibori is a PhD candidate in the Department of Media Studies at Stockholm University. His research primarily focuses on the historiography of early Swedish children’s films, school films, and educational films, as well as questions concerning the definition of the children’s film genre. Through archival work, he aims to reveal how contemporaneous identities of the children’s film genre were intertwined with broader social, political, and cultural dynamics surrounding childhood, national romantic ideology, and modernity. His recent publication is “Reframing Early Swedish Children’s Film History: ‘The Dragonfly’ and the Fluidity of Genre,” Journal of Scandinavian Cinema 15, no. 2 (2025), which has won the Timothy Shary Award for Best Essay in Children’s and Youth Media and Cultural Studies in 2026.
