On 14 June 1944, sisters Vera and Greta Oldberg welcomed students from the Nordic countries whom they had invited to Sweden to promote greater understanding between the Nordic nations. From 1944 to 1955, the sisters hosted gatherings in their home in Stockholm’s Old Town, bringing together participants from across the Nordic region. Many of those who attended went on to become influential figures in public life.
In their will, the sisters stipulated that a foundation should be established to promote Nordic cooperation. The Swedish Academy has a close connection with the foundation, as its statutes provide that the Academy appoints one of the three members of the foundation’s board.

Scholarships
The scholarship supports researchers with a Nordic focus who wish to spend three months or longer at a Swedish research institution in the humanities, social sciences or economics.
The grant is intended to cover expenses during the stay and may also contribute towards costs incurred by the host institution in Sweden.
Applicants may be researchers with a doctoral degree or PhD candidates enrolled in doctoral studies at a Nordic university or higher education institution. Applicants must be citizens of Norway, Denmark, Finland or Iceland.
The scholarship is awarded annually.
