Can Scholars Serve Society Without Losing Autonomy? Join the Discussion at NordMedia25

At the fast-approaching NordMedia25 conference, Nordicom will host a workshop that takes on a timely and complex issue: how scholars can contribute to solving societal challenges without compromising their academic independence.

Titled “Being Relevant and Useful and at the Same Time Remaining Autonomous: The Role of Scholars in Finding Solutions to Societal Challenges”, the workshop will take place on the second day of the conference in Odense, and will bring together scientists and practitioners with broad experience in research communication, policy engagement, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The session will explore pressing questions, including: How can social scientists contribute to society at large? Who is responsible for synthesizing increasingly specialized research? What expectations does society place on scholars – and how can those be balanced with the need for academic autonomy? What new formats might emerge for collaboration and research communication? And what barriers do social scientists face when collaborating, and trying to share their findings with broader audiences?

The panel will feature the following speakers:

The workshop is open to everyone. Join us on August 14 at 14.15 in room U59 at SDU’s campus. The full conference programme can be found here.
