Nordicom to Launch Research Briefings Bridging Academia and Society

Nordicom is launching a new publication series that aims to make research on media, communication, and journalism more accessible to society. The Nordicom Research Briefings series will provide concise overviews on current topics.

Starting in 2026, Nordicom is introducing Nordicom Research Briefings – a series of concise, high-quality literature reviews summarising research on current issues regarding media, communication, journalism, and democracy in the Nordic region.

The initiative is made possible through strategic funding from the Nordic Council of Ministers, as part of the Nordic countries’ joint effort to strengthen research-based knowledge provision with Nordic cooperation.

“Our Nordic governments have made a joint commitment to ensure that the Nordic collaboration in dealing with the most pressing challenges in our societies builds on solid empirical ground. The fact that the Nordic Council of Ministers has chosen to allocate funding to this project is an important step in that direction. Our publication team is eager about this opportunity to contribute”, says Jonas Ohlsson, director of Nordicom.

Each research briefing will answer a specific question through a literature review written by scholars who are experts in their field. All briefings will be peer-reviewed, published Open Access, and freely available online.

An Opportunity for Researchers

For researchers, the series offers an opportunity to translate academic knowledge into a form that reaches beyond the scholarly community. Each briefing will be peer-reviewed and will therefore hold the same academic status as a journal article, while being written in clear, accessible language and designed for practical use. Topics will be selected by Nordicom’s editors based on their societal relevance, often in collaboration with an advisory board representing academia, business, the public sector, and civil society.

“It is our ambition to be on our toes and capture the most pressing topics”, says Magnus Fredriksson, editor at Nordicom.

All briefings will be written in English and highlight themes of relevance to the Nordic region. Each publication will be promoted through tailored communication activities to reach the right audiences within and beyond the Nordics.
