Work assignments
Tema Culture and Society (Tema Q) conducts interdisciplinary research in the interface between humanities and the social sciences with a particular focus on culture, media and cultural heritage. Researchers at Tema Q share an interest in critical and analytical understanding of cultural, social, legal and political dimensions of how knowledge is circulated, interpreted and regulated in and between everyday life, media, institutions and archives. Culture, mediation and materialities are investigated from contemporary, historical and global perspectives.
Tema Q is located at the Division of Culture, Society, Design and Media (KSFM) which is part of the Department of Culture and Society (IKOS). The division conducts teaching on the Bachelor’s Programme in Communication, Society, Media Production and on the Bachelor’s Programme in Global Studies. Teaching is also conducted in the form of various single-subject courses in the aesthetic field and on the Craft for teachers’ education. The division also participates in the interfaculty collaboration Forum för form.
The position as professor of Media and Culture primarily includes research and supervision in the field of media and cultural theory. Contributing to this research field, nationally as well as internationally, is a key task for this position. The holder of this position is also expected to contribute to the development of a strong and well-functioning research environment. The position may also include the role of editor of Culture Unbound: Journal of Current Cultural Research (https://cultureunbound.ep.liu.se/about).
The position involves research and teaching in both Swedish and English.
We assume that you are active in the research community, participate in the division’s activities such as seminars and workshops, participate in research projects, communicate results through academic publications and help attract external research funding.
As a professor of Media and Culture, you will develop and teach on Tema Q doctoral courses, as well as at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
We are looking for a person wanting to contribute actively to the university’s development through administration and management duties such as having responsibility for the research environment and doctoral programmes. Collaboration is an integral part of the University’s research and education mission. Collaboration in research takes the form of disseminating, making available and utilising research. Collaboration in education takes the form of planning, organising and delivering good education in interaction with stakeholders in the surrounding community.
Your work includes monitoring developments nationally and internationally within your field of study and other societal developments that are important to your work.
We expect you to be flexible and have the ability to move between different types of pedagogical and academic contexts. You share knowledge and contribute to the working group’s professional development, collegial ways of working and social community. The fact that you are present and active is something we see as paramount in order to ensure that you are able to perform your duties in an optimum way and enjoy your working relationships.
Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate who has demonstrated both academic and pedagogical proficiency. For this position, particular attention is paid to academic expertise, second to pedagogical expertise, and third to other proficiencies which are judged to be equivalent to each other.
In terms of academic expertise, the following will be assessed:
- To qualify for this position, you must have documented academic expertise in media research and cultural theory.
- Of particular merit for the position is documented proficiency in research on cultural, social or socio-technical dimensions of media.
- Of particular merit for the position is documented academic proficiency in obtaining national and international research grants as well as demonstrating an international research profile.
- Of merit for the position is documented academic proficiency in applying several academic perspectives such as meaning-making, materiality, media aesthetics, algorithmic cultures or globalisation.
In terms of pedagogical expertise, the following will be assessed:
- Documented proficiency in supervision of doctoral students is a requirement for the position.
- Another requirement for the position is documented proficiency in teaching subjects relevant for the position at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
- Of merit for the position is documented pedagogical proficiency at doctoral level regarding teaching, planning and organisation.
Other proficiencies that will be assessed for this position are administration and leadership proficiency.
- It is of merit for the position to have actively contributed to the development of a research environment or research group.
- Documented expertise from academic publishing (e.g. in the role of editor or in the strategic development of an academic journal) is also of merit.
- Documented proficiency in collaboration with the surrounding society in education and research is also of merit for the position.
As teaching and research are conducted both in Swedish and English, you must be able to demonstrate the ability to teach and conduct research in English and it is desirable that within two years you can teach and conduct research in Swedish.
The employment
This employment is permanent, full-time. Starting date by agreement.
