The Children, Youth & Media Section of ECREA invites proposals from its members to organize and host the 2025 Mid-Term Conference. We welcome institutions or research groups within the section to submit proposals to host this event. The section is particularly interested in proposals that aim to bring together scholars to explore the intersections of AI, play, and generations in children’s and youth media research.
About the topic
As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes an integral part of our daily lives, its influence on media, play, and relationships calls for critical reflections. From AI-powered educational tools to algorithm-driven entertainment, young generations are engaging with media in ways that are reshaping learning, creativity, and social interactions (Livingstone & Blum-Ross, 2020). At the same time, AI also offers opportunities for intergenerational learning. Educational games, for example, can enhance AI literacy among families, helping both adults and children understand AI’s technical and ethical aspects (Solyst et al., 2022).
Play — physical and digital — remains central to childhood and adolescence development, though its meanings and forms are changing in the AI age. New technology generates new forms of interactive narratives, and social play, aspects that raise questions about agency, ethics, and digital literacy between generations (Marsh, 2022). Understanding how different generations experience, regulate, and negotiate these changes is fundamental for media scholars, educators, and policymakers.
This mid-term conference seeks to foster interdisciplinary debate about these pressing issues, bringing researchers together to explore how AI, play, and generations shape — and are shaped by — (digital) media in the digital age.
