The Journalist Fund for Further Training is offering scholarships for scientific research in 2024, with a total allocation of SEK 200,000. Individual scholarships can be up to SEK 100,000.
Established in 1969 at the initiative of Dr. Marcus Wallenberg, the Journalist Fund for Further Training aims to support professional journalists in advancing their expertise. Its board comprises representatives from the four Swedish media bodies: Swedish Media Publishers’ Association, The Swedish Union of Journalists, The Swedish National Press Club, and The Press Institute
The fund’s mission is to facilitate professional development for journalists through scholarships, enabling further education in areas that enhance their craft. In line with its statutes, the fund also awards grants to journalists conducting research on journalism and media.
WHO CAN APPLY?
The scholarships are available to journalists researching journalism and media at universities or higher education institutions. Eligible projects must relate to a doctoral thesis or take place within four years of completing a doctorate.
Applicants must demonstrate their qualifications and ability to execute the proposed research through prior professional experience.
All applicants must have worked as journalists for at least four years after completing undergraduate studies, employed by media organisations with a responsible publisher.
APPLICATION DETAILS
Applications are submitted exclusively via the fund’s website and must pertain to a well-defined research project.
Scholarships may cover the researcher’s living expenses during the project and specific costs associated with advanced research, such as travel and materials (computers and phones are excluded).
Applications consist of six parts, uploaded as attachments:
- A detailed description of the research purpose, questions, and methodology.
- A summary of how the research will contribute to greater understanding of journalistic practice and its application in the field (maximum 1,000 characters).
- Documentation of affiliation with a research institution or organisation, along with details of any supervision or collaboration with other researchers (include certifier’s position, address, and contact details).
- A budget and timeline with a clear justification for anticipated expenses.
- The proposed publication format for the final research results.
- A curriculum vitae (CV).
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
DEADLINE
Applications, including all attachments, must be submitted no later than 12 February 2025.
Following the board’s decision on 6 March 2025, successful applicants will be notified. The list of recipients will be published on the fund’s website, Facebook and LinkedIn pages, as well as shared with the magazine Journalisten.
