Have You Heard of Afromedia Network?  – The Initiative Inspired by NordMedia Network

AfroMedia Network is an international research network dedicated to media and communication studies in African contexts and across the African diaspora. Inaugurated in 2022, the network brings together scholars interested in journalism, digital media, communication research, and media systems connected to Africa.

The initiative was inspired by the model behind NordMedia Network: creating a collaborative platform where researchers can share news, projects, publications, and events across institutions and national borders. Following an extended period of preparation in collaboration with Nordicom, the network was inaugurated in Bujumbura, Burundi, in August 2022.

– The aim of AfroMedia Network is to bring together African media scholars through a shared online platform, says Terje Skjerdal, Editor-in-Chief of AfroMedia Network and leader of the NORHED-funded project supporting the platform, “Preparing Media Practitioners for a Resilient Media in Eastern Africa”. There is a significant need for this across the continent, as many researchers find their university websites inadequate or barely functional. Through AfroMedia Network, users can connect with researchers and access information about conferences and developments in African media research.

The portal is currently edited from Norway by NLA University College, with a long-term goal of transferring editorial responsibility to a local African partner by 2028.

Support from NordMedia Network and Nordicom during the initial phase has been invaluable in establishing the platform.

– I would also like to extend special recognition to Maarit Jaakkola for her strong support throughout the development phase of the network, Skjerdal adds.

Since its launch, AfroMedia Network has grown steadily, reaching its goal of 300 members by 2025.

– Members come from across the African continent, and researchers from other regions with a focus on Africa are also warmly invited to join, he says.
