Nora Theorin Joins Nordicom as Researcher and Editor

At the turn of the year, Nora Theorin took up her new position as a researcher at Nordicom. She joins from the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication (JMG) at the University of Gothenburg, where she completed her PhD and conducted a postdoctoral research project on media effects across different European countries. At Nordicom, Theorin will work with the Media Barometer and serve as an editor of Nordicom Review.

Theorin holds a master’s degree in political science from the University of Gothenburg and completed both her doctoral and postdoctoral research at JMG. Her research focuses on public opinion formation, media effects, political psychology, and migration.

– My doctoral project examined how media use affects attitudes toward immigration, while my postdoctoral research mainly focused on how social media and alternative media contribute to the formation of political identities, says Theorin.

She describes her time at JMG as both academically and socially rewarding.

– I have really enjoyed my time at JMG — the research environment, the teaching, and not least the colleagues. That is why it feels particularly good that I will continue working in the same building, she adds.

Working with the Media Barometer and Nordicom Review

In her new role, Theorin will be involved in the Media Barometer, Nordicom’s annual survey of media use in the Swedish population. Her work will include analysis and presentation of results, as well as contributing to the further development of the survey’s design and content.

– One of the things I enjoy most is working through research problems, and I look forward to producing theoretically grounded research based on the Media Barometer, she says.

In addition, she will serve as co-editor of Nordicom Review together with Magnus Fredriksson.

– Nordicom’s mission is to promote and disseminate research-based knowledge about the role and conditions of the media in Sweden and the Nordic countries, says Jonas Ohlsson, Director of Nordicom. Nora Theorin is a highly skilled media researcher and a valued colleague. Her expertise and commitment will strengthen our work at Nordicom.

Strengthening Collaboration within the Media House

Part of Theorin’s assignment will be to initiate and develop collaboration between Nordicom, the SOM Institute, and JMG, with the aim of strengthening the research environment for studies of media use and media effects within the Media House.

– I am used to working in large research groups and enjoy that kind of collaboration. I see it as a strength, both for Nordicom’s work and for developing joint projects with colleagues at the SOM Institute and JMG, says Theorin.

Alongside her work at Nordicom, she will continue teaching at JMG and plans to pursue independently funded research projects.
