For the first time ever, Nordicom Review has been admitted into Web of Science, the most prestigious indexing service in academic publishing. With a 2.0 Journal Impact Factor for 2023, Nordicom Review finishes in the 72nd percentile among the more than 200 international Communication journals assessed in the rankings.
Just before the summer holidays, Web of Science, the abstract and citations database for peer-reviewed literature operated by Clarivate, released its annual report for 2023. The report included the Journal Impact Factor (JIF), which is arguably the most impactful citation index in academia. The JIF reflects the yearly average number of citations to recent articles published in a journal.
For Nordicom Review, Nordicom’s international peer-reviewed journal devoted to new Nordic media and communication research, the report was a happy read. 2023 was the first year ever that Nordicom Review was included in Web of Science, which has higher quality standards than other indexing services and is therefore harder to be admitted into.
For 2023, Nordicom Review reported a JIF of 2.0, a score that lands the journal in place 64 (or the 72 percentile) among the 227 international journals indexed in the Communication category.
– Being admitted into Web of Science – and with such a good result – is a great acknowledgement of our journal and the authors that have published with us over the past few years, says Jonas Ohlsson, director of Nordicom. It shows that even a small independent journal such as ours can make an impact in the greater world of academic publishing. It also shows that research focusing specifically on Nordic conditions is attracting a lot of interest, including in the international research community.
The positive development for Nordicom Review was mirrored by the largest indexing service Scopus, whose
CiteScore is equivalent to JIF. Nordicom Review’s CiteScore for 2023, which was also released in June, increased from 2.5 to 2.8 – a new record for the 44-year-old journal.
Nordicom Review is published Open Access, without article processing charges, and under a CC license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). The journal adheres to a rigorous double-blind reviewing policy, and articles are published on a digital-only continuous basis. Nordicom Review is published with support from the Nordic Council of Ministers.
