Nordicom Review has reached a new benchmark in academic visibility and impact, recording a CiteScore of 4.0 for 2024. This is the highest score in the journal’s history and a notable increase from its previous record of 2.8 in 2023.
The CiteScore, calculated by Elsevier’s Scopus database, reflects the average number of citations per publication over the past four years. A score of 4.0 places the journal in the 81st percentile in the Communication category and in the 95th percentile in the Cultural Studies category. This is the sixth straight year that Nordicom Review has seen its CiteScore rise. In 2018, the journal’s CiteScore was only 0.8.
“It has been a long-time ambition of ours to increase the relevance and academic impact of Nordicom Review. To substantially elevate a journal in the highly competitive climate of academic publishing in the way that we have done requires both devotion and stamina. Because it is really a marathon race. And we are still not near the finish line in terms of what we are aiming for long-term”, says Jonas Ohlsson, director of Nordicom.
Tailor-Made Promotion of All Individual Articles
The Scopus index includes more than 500 international journals in the Communication category alone. The ability to be discovered and read, and hopefully cited, is a challenge for all journal publishers. At Nordicom, all individual journal articles accepted for publication are assigned a tailor-made promotion plan. This has proven successful when it comes to attracting attention. In 2024, the number of downloads of Nordicom Review articles amounted to over 72,000, with even more reading online.
“We always have in mind ways to improve our promotion and increase the reach of the articles we publish. We have developed new formats for posts, sought out new groups and lists to contact, and we continue to work together with our authors to reach the right target groups”, shares Mia Jonsson Lindell, communications officer at Nordicom.
A New Special Issue Devoted to Literature Overviews
The editorial team behind Nordicom Review works continuously to expand not only the impact but also improve the quality of the journal. The most recent example of this is a new special issue which, instead of being organised around a topical theme, instead presents various literature reviews on different topics related to media, communication, and democracy in the Nordics.
“If we researchers find it hard to stay updated, one can only imagine how difficult it must be for others who want to learn more about what we know”, says Magnus Fredriksson, one of the editors of the special issue. “This was the motivation behind launching this special issue, and we have received much interest in it”.
Looking Forward
The next special issue of Nordicom Review will explore visual political communication, and the Call for papers is open until 15 September. The editors invite scholars from the fields of media, communication, political science, and related disciplines to submit extended abstracts exploring the evolving landscape of visual political communication in the Nordics, focusing on comparative aspects, content, and effects.
“It’s been so rewarding to see our journal grow in quality and impact, and I’m so proud to be part of this stellar team. Another wonderful part of our work is supporting the Nordic media and communications research community. We look forward to seeing what new developments the future holds” shares Kristin Clay, manuscript editor at Nordicom.
