Nordicom Review Reaches Milestone Q1 Position in Web of Science Rankings

For the first time, Nordicom Review has reached the top quartile (Q1) in the Web of Science ranking of international communication journals. With a Journal Impact Factor of 2.5 for 2025, the Nordic Diamond Open Access journal has achieved its strongest position to date.

The latest Journal Citation Reports, released by Clarivate this summer, rank Nordicom Review 53rd among 227 journals in the Communication category. This places the journal in the 77th percentile – and, for the first time, among the top 25 per cent of journals in the field.

The Journal Impact Factor (JIF) measures how frequently a journal’s recent publications are cited and is one of the most widely used indicators of academic journal impact. Nordicom Review was first awarded a Journal Impact Factor in 2022, and the new score of 2.5 marks its highest level so far.

For Nordicom, the new ranking represents an important milestone in the journal’s long-term development from a predominantly Nordic publication to an international journal firmly rooted in the Nordic media and communication research community.

“The new JIF is a testament to the long-term efforts of our editorial team to strengthen the quality and impact of the journal,” says Jonas Ohlsson, Director of Nordicom. “Some ten years ago, Nordicom Review was denied inclusion in Web of Science on the grounds that the journal was considered too provincial and had too little international relevance. Today, it ranks among the top quartile of journals in our field.”

Nordicom Review is published by Nordicom under a Diamond Open Access model, with no fees for either readers or authors. All articles undergo double-blind peer review and are published online on a continuous basis. The journal is published with support from the Nordic Council of Ministers.
