NordMedia27: Call for Temporary Working Groups and Division Transition Applications

NordMedia invites proposals for new and continuing Temporary Working Groups (TWGs), as well as applications from established TWGs seeking to transition into formal Divisions. NordMedia27 will be held in Helsinki, Finland, on 11–13 August 2027.

NordMedia’s conference structure currently comprises 14 Divisions and 3 TWGs, representing a broad range of established and emerging areas within Nordic media and communication research.

Call for Temporary Working Groups

Temporary Working Groups provide a forum for emerging, specialised or cross-cutting areas of media and communication research that are not sufficiently represented within NordMedia’s existing Divisions.

New TWGs are invited to submit proposals for inclusion in NordMedia27. Existing TWGs that participated in NordMedia25 in Odense and wish to continue at NordMedia27 must also reapply.

Application requirements for TWGs

Please submit the following:

  1. TWG description
A text of no more than 300 words outlining the proposed TWG’s main objectives, thematic scope and relevance to Nordic media and communication research. The application should also explain how the proposed group differs from, or complements, the existing NordMedia Divisions and TWGs. Applications from continuing TWGs should summarise their activities at the previous conference and explain why the group wishes to continue.
  2. Presentation text
A text of no more than 200 words presenting the TWG and the kinds of submissions, questions and approaches it wishes to attract. This text may be used on the conference website and in the NordMedia27 call for abstracts.
  3. Proposed leadership
The names, affiliations and contact details of the proposed/existing chair and one or two co-chairs. At least one member of the leadership team should be a senior scholar. For continuing TWGs, the renewal of the leadership can be discussed at the onsite conference in Helsinki.

For information about the current Divisions and TWGs, please consult the NordMedia website.

Applications to transition from a TWG to a Division

Established TWGs that have operated successfully over several NordMedia conferences are invited to apply for transition into formal Divisions. NordMedia does not specify a fixed minimum number of conferences; applications are assessed on the basis of the group’s continuity, activity, membership, distinctiveness and demonstrated capacity to function as a sustainable Division.

Applications should include:

  • Participation in NordMedia conferences: State the conferences in which the TWG has participated and briefly describe its development over time.
  • Membership and participation: Provide the current number of members and, where possible, information about submissions, sessions and participation at previous conferences.
  • Activities and achievements: Summarise the TWG’s activities since its establishment, including conference sessions, meetings, publications, collaborations or other relevant outcomes.
  • Academic scope and distinctiveness: Explain the field represented by the TWG and how it differs from or complements the existing Divisions.
  • Rationale for transition: Describe why Division status is appropriate and how it would support the field’s continued development within NordMedia.
  • Sustainability and leadership: Outline the group’s plans for maintaining active membership, renewing its leadership and organising activities across future conferences.

Submission and deadline

The deadline for proposals for new or continuing TWGs and applications to transition into a Division is 30 November 2026.

Please send applications to nordmedia@nordmedianetwork.org.

If you have any questions about the application process, please do not hesitate to contact Maarit Jaakkola (maarit.jaakkola@gu.se), Nordicom and NordMedia Network, or Juha Herkman (juha.herkman@helsinki), chair of the local planning committee.
