Have you ever considered reviewing a book but don’t really know how to start or whether it’s worth it? This guidebook for writing academic book reviews will help you understand the basics of book reviewing for academic journals.

The guidebook Joining the Scholarly Conversation: The Basics of Writing an Academic Book Review is now available online as part of NordMedia Network’s Academic Book Review Community. It is written by Maarit Jaakkola, editor-in-chief of NordMedia Network, who has recently been studying the genre of reviews in different forms.
The handbook contains information about the functions and purposes of academic book reviews, as well as the commissioning and production processes of book reviews. It also provides some practical advice on the reading and writing as well as post-production processes, drawing on research.
The Academic Book Review Community was launched in Spring 2021 as an initiative to support and encourage scholars in getting started with a genre that is often neglected in study programmes and overshadowed by other academic genres in writing and publishing.
In the future, NordMedia Network will publish more practical guidebooks. If you have an idea in mind of what our next guidebook could be, or if you would be interested in authoring such an online resource, please contact us.
